Shaw is toward the eastern edge of the Northwest quadrant of DC. Shaw experienced a revitalization in the 2000’s after spending the decades since the 1968 riots in a struggle to rebuild. The U Street corridor is on the northern edge of the neighborhood and is included as part of Shaw. The southern border is Mount Vernon Square, 9th Street to the west and 1st Street to the east. The neighborhood has green/yellow line metro access at 7th and S.

Get to Know Shaw
The area was the epicenter of African American culture for many years and U Street was coined “Black Broadway.” Howard Theatre and Dunbar Theatre are in Shaw, as well as one of Duke Ellington’s childhood homes. Shaw also includes an area of 9th Street and U called “Little Ethiopia” which is a concentration of Ethiopian owned shops and restaurants.
Real Estate in Shaw
Many streets are residential and lined with Victorian rowhomes. There are several commercial areas - along U Street, 7th Street, 9th Street. The O Street Market is on 7th Street and was converted to apartments. Giant Grocery store is across the street.
Shaw is also home to the Blagden Alley - Naylor Court historic district where you will find cafes and restaurants as well some of the city’s most recognizable murals.
Schools
The littlest residents in Shaw will go to one of three elementary schools - Seaton, Garrison or Cleveland.
